YOUNG WARRIORS BANNER.png

Build confidence, have fun and learn the tricks behind epic fight scenes!

Our stage combat training for children and young people combines fight technique, performance and play in a safe and supportive environment, built around three simple principles: PLAY. FIGHT. RESPECT.

Young Warriors are encouraged to have a go, make mistakes and challenge themselves while learning how to trust, communicate and look after themselves and others.

Whether they dream of performing on stage, working on screen or simply want to try something fun, Young Warrior training gives young people skills they can take far beyond fight performance.

PLAY

Stage combat is best when there’s a sense of fun and play! Finding the fun is at the heart of our work. Through games, movement and creative exercises, Young Warriors will explore ideas and concepts and discover new ways to move and play. They will be encouraged to use their imaginations, create characters and make bold acting choices to bring their fight scenes to life. Together, we’ll create an environment where young people feel comfortable being silly, letting go of self-consciousness and enjoying the moment.

The aim?

Smiling faces, big imaginations and young people leaving thinking:

“That was so much fun!”

FIGHT

Ever wondered how performers pull off incredible fight scenes? Young Warriors will discover the tricks behind exciting and convincing fight scenes. Together, we'll explore how movement, timing, reactions and vocalisation bring a fight to life and help tell the story to an audience.

We’ll also explore key safeties that help us understand how to look after ourselves and others, assess risk and make fight scenes safe and repeatable. Through learning new techniques and playing with fight choreography, Young Warriors will build performance skills, develop control, and discover how to perform fights safely and effectively.

RESPECT

Stage combat is built on trust, communication and respect. Young Warriors will explore how to communicate with others, understand consent, and respect personal boundaries. We’ll practise how to express preferences, listen to others and speak up when something doesn’t feel right.

Stage combat gives Young Warriors the opportunity to put these skills into practice, working together to create safe, repeatable fight scenes where everyone feels comfortable. These are skills they can take beyond fight performance, helping them build confidence, develop relationships and work well with others in everyday life.

WORKSHOPS

Below is a selection of some of the workshops on offer.

Each workshop, no matter the theme, is tailored to age group and experience.

Unarmed is one of our most popular workshops. This workshop explores the key safety and performance features of unarmed combat. Discover the tricks behind one of the most common forms of fight, seen across many different genres on both stage and screen. Young Warriors will learn how to perform action safely while making the fight work for the audience. They'll then practice their skills by performing their own fight scene.

This workshop is all about creativity... and a bit of chaos! Build a Brawl gives Young Warriors the opportunity to develop their unarmed combat skills before putting their creativity to the test. After learning key safety and performance elements, they'll choose random characters, relationships, locations and reasons to fight. Then they'll work together to create, choreograph and perform their own original fight scenes.

Bring a text to life through stage combat! Our Written Action workshop is great for those studying a particular text. Whether it's Shakespeare or something more contemporary, this workshop gives Young Warriors the opportunity to explore the characters, relationships and motivations behind a fight before learning stage combat techniques and choreography that bring the text to life.

No text in mind? One can be provided.

Heroes and Villains is all about character, physicality and an epic battle! Particularly popular with the youngest of warriors, this workshop explores how heroes and villains move, stand and interact. Through creative exercises and games, Young Warriors discover how physicality can bring a character to life. They'll learn key unarmed combat techniques before using their new skills to create their own fight sequences. Then all their creations will come together in one big battle!
